The Gateway…

This is only a brief post. Someone emailed me this wonderful, detailed photo of the gateway of High Sunderland:


It was the final piece of the puzzle and I was able to finish this painting today.


This is the gateway described by Lockwood in Wuthering Heights:

“Before passing the threshold I paused to admire a quantity of grotesque carving lavished over the front and especially about the principal door, above which, among the wilderness of crumbling griffins and shameless little boys, I detected the date 1500 …”

Several pieces of the gateway – though possibly of the inside – are now at Shibden Hall museum in Halifax.
